News
On
Thursday we had our own school elections.
Well done Poplar for organising it and making the voting process run so
smoothly.
Literacy
In literacy we have been continuing to look at fantasy
stories. We have identified the features
of a fantasy story and read some extracts from The Hobbit and Lord of the
Rings.
Mathematics
In Mrs Prowle’s group, we have finished our work on fractions
by learning how to add and subtract them.
Some of us challenged ourselves by adding fractions with different
denominators which meant we had to convert them to equivalent fractions with a
common denominator first. Although it was quite tough, we really enjoyed it.
However, we need to remember to simplify our answers wherever possible,
including changing improper fractions to mixed numbers.
For homework, please carry out the online activity which
involves practising many of our fractions skills.
In Mrs Williams and Mrs Gilder’s group we have been looking at
symmetry. We recapped on the meaning of
the words right angle, parallel, perpendicular, horizontal and vertical.
For homework please carry out the online activity which
involves using these terms and identifying them in 2d shapes.
Science
In science we have been looking at rocks and thinking about
their properties.
Which rocks can you remember the name of?
Maple Class tested the permeability and hardness of rocks to
complete the challenge of finding the best rock to use for a statue of Ms
Buckley. We decided marble would be a good choice because it is impermeable,
can be carved (scratched with a nail!) and is attractive to look at.
Topic
We have been looking at the
location of the tectonic plate boundaries around the world and learning about
the Pacific Ring of Fire which is where the majority of the volcanic activity
is. We used our map and atlas skills to mark some of the more famous volcanoes
on a blank map in our books.
Art
Following
our theme of imaginary worlds we have been creating homes for elves, fairies
and goblins in the woods.
