LKS2 news!
Its been another exciting week in LKS2.
Across the school it has been 'Take one book' week where all of our learning has been centred around a single book. The children and staff have all thoroughly enjoyed getting to know our class books inside out and it was lovely to welcome lots of parents on Friday afternoon to see what we have been doing.
Maple Class have enjoyed reading 'GIraffes can't dance' by Giles Andreae and Guy Parker-Rees in which Gerald learns that he can dance having been ridiculed by the other animals. He just needs to find the right music and keep trying.
Lime class have been reading 'Voices in the Park' by Anthony Browne.
Poplar Class have been reading 'Journey' by Aaron Becker. The story is told completely in pictures enabling the children to create their own story behind these.

Maths
Maple: All of our maths has been taken from 'Giraffes can't dance this week. First we tried to place pictures of the animals in the story in height order but this was quite tricky as the pictures didn't really show us how tall they are. Then we researched their heights but found that some were written in m, cm while others were just written in cm. We decided we needed to have all the heights in the same unit of measurement so we practised converting m to cm and then used the information to arrange the animals again. Finally we measured all the heights on the wall and stuck post-its to show us how tall each animal is. We were amazed at just how big some African animals actually are!
English
Maple Class identified lots of alliteration in our book and created our own alliterative phrases for other animals in the story. We then used these to write our own additions to the Jungle Dance. Later in the week, we re-told the story from Gerald's point of view; turning it from 3rd person to 1st. We came up with some amazing vocabulary to describe how Gerald felt at the Jungle Dance - 'anxious,' 'indecisive', 'apprehensive', 'jealous', 'embarrassed'.
English Homework
Maple - homework based on 'Giraffes can't dance'. Highlight the different parts of speech. Can you tell the difference between a common and a proper noun?
Poplar - homework based on 'Journey' - children to create their own story either by using pictures or words about a little girl who draws a door on a bedroom wall and the adventure she has.

PSHE
Using 'Giraffes can't dance', Maple Class explored the idea of fixed and growth mindsets. At the beginning Gerald uses phrases such as 'I'm useless' and 'I feel like such a clot'. Eventually he leaves the dance as he feels so bad about himself, not helped by the lack of encouragement from the other animals. However, when he meets a wise cricket, he learns that he just has to find the right music and his body will do the rest so that, by the end, he shouts 'I AM dancing!' with glee. The children all admitted that they have used negative phrases about themselves in the past, things such as 'I'm rubbish at maths,' 'I can't spell,' ' I'm never going to be any good at this'. We then discussed all of the things that they CAN do and that they have learned over the years. The children looked back through their Oakwood Books to compare their first piece of work from Acorns with what they are able to do now and all of them started to see that a growth mindset is much more positive and helpful to achieving success!

Maple painted pictures of Gerald dancing and made movable giraffes using split pins. We had great fun putting them in different groovy positions!
